Studies on Some Horticultural Characters Influencing Quality and Yield in the Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)

Abstract
This study was undertaken to obtain a basic information concerning selection and breeding procedures, and to identify correlations among characters such as yield, capsaicin content, total red color level, etc. with the pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). Highly positive correlations with yield were shown in leaf characters:leaf length, width and petiole length, and characters of plant size: plant height and main stem length. Capsaicin content was negatively correlated with the weight and size of fruit, but positively correlated with the days to first flowering, plant height, stem diameter, and number of fruits per plant. Total red color level was negatively associated with other characters, especially with stem diameter, leaf length and petiole length. Of these characters, numbers of red fruit and leaf width had strong and direct influences on total yield. Comparing with total field yields, selection scores on yield were made of three main characters, plant height (X©û), main stem length (X©ü) and stem diameter (X©ý).
